The Manila Hotel

The Manila Hotel is the oldest premiere hotel in the country, built in 1909 and completed in 1912. It was constructed during the time American President William McKinley was taking actions in “Americanizing” the city. He hired Daniel Hudson Burnham, city planner and architect of Union Station and the post office in Washington. They envisioned grand yet accommodating hotel with a spectacular view of the sunset at Manila Bay as well as the whole city.

In World War II, the Manila Hotel became the residence of the General Douglas McArthur from 1935 to 1941. It was bombed by Japanese but survived and was later reconstructed after the war. In 1976, the hotel was remodeled and expanded to 570 rooms by commission architect, Andres Luna de San Pedro. Andres was a Paris-trained Filipino architect and son of renowned artist, Juan Luna.

The Manila Hotel has been home to several notable personalities such as President John F. Kennedy, Michael Jackson, The Beatles, and Ernest Hemingway who once said “It is a good story if it’s like Manila Hotel.”
